Androstenedione is a natural hormone which is a direct precursor to testosterone. Androstenedione is produced naturally in humans during the production of testosterone and estrogen. It is considered an anabolic steroid precursor because it can be converted in the body to testosterone. One study reported that an androstenedione dose of 300 milligrams daily led to significant elevation of serum testosterone. The elevation was not seen, in the same study, in those receiving daily doses of 100 milligrams. Another study reported that neither 100- nor 300-milligram daily doses of androstenedione led to significant increases in serum testosterone.
Androstenedione itself has no significant performance-enhancing effect. However, the muscle-building effects of testosterone are well documented. Many scientific studies report that large doses of testosterone significantly increase muscle size and strength.
