Androstenedione

Androstenedione is a natural hormone which is a direct precursor to testosterone. Androstenedione is produced naturally in humans during the production of testosterone and estrogen. It is considered an anabolic steroid precursor because it can be converted in the body to testosterone. Scientific evidence shows that when androstenedione is taken over time and in sufficient quantities, it may increase the risk of serious and life-threatening diseases. Androgens are classified as C-19 steroids and are secreted by the testes, adrenals and ovaries. They have a profound influence on the development of secondary male characteristics.

Androstenedione is an intermediate in the steroid pathway from DHEA to testosterone. When androstenedione is administered, it causes a rapid increase in testosterone levels, which last only for a few hours. It does not increase testosterone in any lasting way. For men and women who may want a brief testosterone surge for 1) enhancing anabolic gains from strength exercises, or 2) enhancing libido for prosexual purposes, androstenedione can be an effective option. Androstenedione is synthesized in the adrenal gland and gonads from dehydroepiandrosterone. It is metabolized by the enzyme 17 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase to testosterone, and by the aromatase enzyme complex to estrone. Estrone is metabolized to estradiol.

Androstenedione is manufactured as a dietary supplement, often called andro for short. The substance has similar effects to anabolic steroids when taken as a supplement, allowing users to build muscle mass. Andro, much like DHEA, can have powerful effects on muscle-building and athletic performance. DHEA is two steps away from becoming testosterone. However, unlike DHEA, andro is only one step away from testosterone. Therefore, by itself, it is not a muscle builder; but after the liver converts it to testosterone-watch out, BIG gains are on their way. Studies conducted on andro indicate that when taken orally, androstenedione produces significantly more testosterone than either a placebo or DHEA.

Androstenedione is metabolized to testosterone in both men and women. Supraphysiologic doses of testosterone have been reported to increase nitrogen retention and increase muscle mass and strength. Women taking 100-milligram oral doses of androstenedione have had significant increases in serum testosterone. The results with men have been variable. One study reported that an androstenedione dose of 300 milligrams daily led to significant elevation of serum testosterone. The elevation was not seen, in the same study, in those receiving daily doses of 100 milligrams. Another study reported that neither 100- nor 300-milligram daily doses of androstenedione led to significant increases in serum testosterone.

Androstenedione itself has no significant performance-enhancing effect. However, the muscle-building effects of testosterone are well documented. Many scientific studies report that large doses of testosterone significantly increase muscle size and strength. Supplementation with androstenedione, the immediate precursor to testosterone, is believed to elevate blood testosterone levels in both males and females and thus increase muscle mass and physical strength. Androstenedione is a precursor to testosterone – only one step away from becoming testosterone in the body’s chemical pathway. Androstenedione in a liposome transdermal cream is an effective delivery system which works in synchronization with a man’s own hormone metabolism to boost blood testosterone levels.

Androstenedione is a weak male hormone or androgen, an intermediate steroid made by the adrenal glands and the gonads of men and women for one ultimate purpose – the creation of the primary male hormone testosterone. Testosterone plays an important role in the maintenance of lean body mass, bone density, skin elasticity, cardiovascular health and last but not least, libido. Technically, androstenedione is not a hormone but a prohormone – a precursor on its way to being converted into a hormone. In the body’s chemical pathway androstenedione is only one step away from becoming testosterone.
